All nicely said until you go to a plant thats numbers and not colors!

Some guys cant see different colors as well as most. Maybe thats why the Purple for B phase in some places.

I will always use Orange as a hi leg and as B phase on 480 unless the plant has something else in place.

The colors of conductors can be anything you want. The only time they need to be identified (color coded) is if you have conditions that fall under 200.6.D for grounded conductors and 110.15 / 230.56 for the high-leg.

So, the only colors that have to be are:

Green - Ground
White/Grey - Neutral
Orange - High leg on a Delta

I can't think or remember any other ones.

I don't know. I kinda think of yellow and green as, well, different. One is around 550 nm (green) and the ohter is 580 nm (yellow).

Yup. If its #4 or larger... you do need to perminently mark it so that people know it is the grounding conductor. White or grey tape.

B phase has the same voltage as A & C, my point is there is no high leg on 480. :grin:

The one and only time I've seen something different was on an old farm. I installed 3 new services on various places around the farm and two of them had one leg that measured 405 volts to neutral if I remember correctly. 480 between phases.:-?
