The idea for color coding NM came from a book by Rex Cauldwell called Wiring a House, For Pros by Pros.

The boss at Southwire read this book and decided to implement the color-coding.

Rex writes about this on page 134 of the 4th edition.

He was also writing articles for Fine Home Building around the same time and there is one article where there is a picture of him spray painting a 250' reel of 12-2 romex yellow. I'm sure that's why Southwire went with that for 12.

I've worked in some 50's house where everything was kind of a non-descript beige color (darker than the off-white that we use for 14 now).

I was going to post about how obnoxious it is that 6 and 8 are both black, and the digits are almost the same shape.

You are showing early symptoms of “ CRS”. It goes hand in hand with, CSS, CHS, CDS, and CCFS. I think I have one foot in that boat myself.

Have the uncensored T-shirt* with CRS on it, but usually say I suffer from CRS with the censored version meaning Can't Remember Stuff. :D

*Given to me but too small, but not sure I would ever be seen wearing one that fit me.
