Regarding commercial work. If you have a lot of large conduit, wire and equipment on a roof( say 8 stories) it is more efficient to have a crane pick the conduit/wire/equipment rather then bring it up via hoist?

Will you have a material boat or crib on the job? One pick with a full crib will likely save on labor even if you have to payoff the operating engineer a few hundred bucks for a pick.

Don't believe there will be a crane aside from the one we will have to set the generator on roof.
If the crane won't be available to move your material on to the roof I think that you've answered your own question.
Not that I know of. Where do you get them from? Have to assmeble or they come together?
We buy them. The come in all different sizes and configurations. All have lifting eyes at the four corners to allow sling attachments to be picked up by the crane. Typical "bribe" for the engineer is about $200-$300. For high rise construction you couldn't build a deck without them.

What do you mean by your last sentence??? Mean "without" them?

But one could hire a crane

I have never dealt with this, specifically. I would guess there are few of us here who have. I am sure many of us have been on jobs where the Construction Manager, or the Mechanical contractor has, but the situation where we would need to put something large on the roof would be rare.
That said I would recommend you talk to your favorite GC and your largest mechanical contractor, or do some research on rigging companies. For even shorter lifts than this, I have seen a Mechanical use a helicopter to fly stuff up.

As often with your questions (which are quite valid) the variables make it hard to answer. I am now guessing this is an existing building with an elevator. And a few hundred feet of conduit would not be impossible to haul up to the roof. The wire, would be a much bigger challenge, but planning, like putting a pull box on the floor below, pulling from there and then feeding to the roof is one option.

Thanks and yes existing building with freight elevators and hoist.

In your scenario the existing elevator should work. The issue with roof installations is that the elevator almost never goes to to the roof level so the last section vertical travel is going to be a stairwell. If you have large equipment or reels of cable going to the roof level it may not be possible or practicable to move it through a stairwell. In that case a pick with a crane may be the only option.

A little planning by you and/or your foreman seems in order, If you are going to need a crane for the generator try to have all the other rooftop material on site at that time and lift it all.
