Well 3 solid is a bit tough to get in a conduit.

If it is outdoors in a conduit then it must have a "W" in it. Most THHN wire is dual rated as THWN also.

When you mentioned the #3 solid I wondered where in the world you would find that animal. I would be almost as surprised if you found a THHN that did not also have a THWN rating, but, to answer, a "W" conductor is needed both due to the exposure at the weatherhead and being inside an outdoor raceway. (THWN, RHW, XHHW, etc)

I do use 4 AWG solid a lot for GEC's. Not too bad to bend.
