Every Meter Enclosure I have seen has had a knockout in the back of it. I'd suggest that you have someone more familiar with this look at what you are trying to do.

chidesd, you might check with the serving electric utility. In some of our meter equipment, we do not permit exits out the back.

We still supply meter fittings and because our customers want our cash register as small as possible, we accommodate them with small meter fittings. Our equipment doesn't have the wire bending room that is required to make the bends in some of out fittings.
This is especially true when we use a 400 ampere, three phase meter fitting with bar type CT's. Since we restrict how some of the wiring is done, I would assume (d - - -, I don't like that word ) other electric utilities have their own rules since that is where they will plug in their cash register.
