My Dad was Allan so shoot me.
So was mine, and so is my brother, and so is my son-in-law (but that's his last name). So I can't do any shooting. Besides, I was agreeing with you. Must be one of those "monday things." I try not to agree with you again.

Doesn't matter. The point is your Building Dept refuses to pass a job where someone uses drywall screws.

Do you back them out and determine they are drywall screws? How do you determine if a screw is a drywall screw? There are many that look like drywall screws but are not!

I don't see how you can make a blanket statement:
Our department fails all electrical equipment fastnened with drywall screws.

Allen, Diamler- Chrysler is the only one of the big 3 that makes money.

GM just laid off another 600 white collar workers 2 weeks ago.

By the way, You Florida guys just remember if it wasn't for people retiring and vacationing in FL from the north, it would still be nothing but a sweltering wetlands!! :)

You're right.
And I contemplated adding a post about that before, but I was pretty busy.

One thing about my department that sucks for me but is great for all of the contractors is that we have a firm policy about all inspections called in by 3pm of any business day, to do those inspections on the next business day. As you can imagine, we get large swings in work load from one day to the next and no way to even out the work load other than to cover for each other if the work load is high in one area of the county. I'm hoping that we tweek the rule to allow a 2 day window for temps and (perm) service mains.

Anyway, "Do you back them out and determine they are drywall screws? How do you determine if a screw is a drywall screw? There are many that look like drywall screws but are not!" What I was going to post before was that the drywall screw prohibition is a pretty low priority for us, so I imagine that it slides thru most of the time. If one of us happens to see a black countersunk phillips head, then we investigate. If a contractor uses a different colored drywall screw, it's pretty near 100% that they won't get written up for it. There are alot of different screws that are countersunk with phillip heads so we don't bother to pursue it if it isn't black.

Its ok we let yankees in as long as they have money. Not knocking southern calif it was my second choice on where to go.If there was more work in the Florida keys i would be in Key West again.

A poor mans California lol lol lol.I`ll take my 3.5 acres I bought for less than $6,000 and put it up against the same 3.5 in CALIFORNIA.At least we don`t have ahj`s telling us what kind of bulb can be installed  During february I was on the gulf fishing while the others in those nice freezing northern areas are digging out from snow.So if we are a poor mans CALIFORNIA so be it.I am bidding on 30 acres 90 miles north of here with 300 ft on deep canal access a cool 125,000 if it goes through I will open a fish camp and invite all on this forum for a free week just to see us poor man floridians lol lol lol  by the way there are enough fish for all.We keep the surfer boys on the west coast lol lol lol.

Allen, you are basically proving my point.

Your 3.5 acres for 6,000 dollars would be worth multiple millions in coastal southern California.

Edited out: "or billions" I didn't want to exaggerate

David I doubt that is the case at all.

I think the issue is none of us like out of control inspectors on a mission to save the world.

Strangely I have to agree an AHJ can refuse to 'approve' something.

However they better have a real reason or they could end up on the losing end.

The AHJ could refuse all GE panels because they 'don't like them'.

However they could also expect a letter from GE suggesting that decision is changed or expect a lawsuit.
So if you think the AHJ can refuse to approve something if they have a real reason, how about Mike's reason ?

The black drywall screws have a coating that protects them against corrosion from the chemical composition of the drywall. As a byproduct, they are very brittle. Even a cursory google of the internet will bring up thousands of cautions against using them in applications requiring any real strength. As many have already said, they are especially poor in shear strength.

I just read the original question and hit the reply I suspect there is a lot of nonsense between those two points.
