Smokes in a dwelling with an apt

Didn't really read the who post, but did you check with the POCO and see if they will allow a separate meter. Ours here would not. One address, one meter. So it would be kind of a moot point. I would think that a smoke detector would be required anyway. "In each story within a dwelling unit, including basements...."

I am wiring a home that will have a mother in law apartment in part of the basement. At some point it may be a rental. Home owner wants a separate meter and wants just standard smoke and carbon detectors- line voltage. I would want the apartment and the house to be tied together but I am not sure that would be compliant. I am assuming I cannot have a branch circuit from the home be connected to a device in the apartment since they are separate meters. Any thoughts.

I assume that I don't have to tie them together but I would surely want it in my home. Is the only way to do this thru a LV system?

If your truely openly truthful with Organge County they will require fire rated construction of two hours between the two structures this includes the door to upstairs, thus two seperate fire systems.

And I laugh every time one of those Home Improvement Shows 'adds' an apartment. The ones in the basement without egress are the best.
