With regard to a split system A/C system (heat pump outside and air handling unit inside), would it be a fair assumption to say the heat pump complies to Article 440 while the air handling unit complies to Article 430?

Thanks in advance.

I have always considered the AHU for a mini split system to fall under 422 Appliances. I sure there are varying opinions.

As some of the AHJ in my area require a separate disco and some don't. I now just call the inspector ahead of time and ask. Although I feel it falls under 422.31

he might not be asking about a mini split, but just a normal split system. I think they fall into different categories.

Perhaps you will in the next century, but by then he will have at least 50 billion or so posts. :D

Mini system or not the NEC requires some sort of disconnecting means at the indoor unit.
Which is sort of a pain to do, sometimes. Something that could be done at the factory for a couple bucks costs a couple hundred, sometimes, to pull off in the field. I havn't looked into it thoroughly, but I suspect a breaker lockoff might be the thing to do.

OK, strike that, I have seen them. :D

In residential I never have though.
Then you must not have seen any of my work? :D I usually just put a Wiremold V5747 with a snap switch right next to the indoor piece. Very darned few of these have a factory rocker switch, and that's a shame. Two dollars at the factory could save a whole lot of aggrivation. Particularly now that they're making mini-splits that you can hang 20-32 indoor units off one outdoor unit, for refitting old office buildings and such.

I swear the last split unit I did the indoor blower was low voltage...?

mitsu makes a minisplit that has 12v fans indoors. They're really quiet. The included IR remote is nice too.

For the mini-splits I have done, we bring the HR outside to a SP or DP switch then feed the unit. The wiring from there back to the inside unit is usually LV.

There have been a couple of units where we have had to run wire from outside/inside. There are usually 5-7 wires I don't know where you would find a 5 pole switch.

On one occasion, we had to re-run 7 #14's 150' from the inside unit to the outside unit because the signals on the couldn't "travel" through the splices in the 3 or 4 junction boxes along the way. (That was a fun pull.)

The point is a disco by the inside unit may cause a unit to not operate properly.
