How many of you actually split duplex recepts any more on a regular basis? I find it in older living rooms, but that's it......and if my hunch is correct that its not hardely done anymore, why is there two sets of screws on a duplex? are we just in a culture trap here.....???:D

2 sets of screws so that those that don't like to backstab can wrap both (in and out) sets of wires on the device.

i believe in the 08 code that you are no longer allowed to split the recept and have the bottom one (always hot) count as your required recept for wall space. If using a switched outlet instead of a light, it doesn't cont for the required outlets.

Do you pigtail every outlet to a single connection point for trim out?

We split receptacles quite a bit in a home- there is almost always a dishwasher/disposal outlet you need to split in a kitchen reno, and we do switched outlets in living rooms and masterbed rooms a fair amount.

The other half (always hot) covers you.

I'd like to see a number for that.
Would a single floor receptacle count?

I believe Alfies point was that steelerman was incorrect in saying that a half switched outlet is not code compliant without an additional outlet.

He asked about a single receptacle. If it's a single recep and it's switched, it does not count as a required receptacle in the 6' spacing requirements.

I believe floor recepts must be within 18 inches of wall
to be counted

Yes. 210.52(A)(3).
