I want to hang 8' flour lights from a ceiling I found in the code you could go 5' between supports so does that mean that i could have 5' of pipe between fixtures without any supports

If the fixtures were mounted rigidly to a structural member, Yes.
If they were hung off of chain or the like it would be up to your AHJ. Personally, it would be o.k. in most applications.

I would say no. The maximum you could go totally unsupported is 18". Look at 358.30(c).

Even if you apply the '5 foot' rule you need at least one support.

Meaning if the fixtures are 10' apart or 1' apart you would still need a minimum of one support between the fixtures.

Are you looking in the 02?

No 358.30(C) is new to the 2008 NEC. This section was added to clarify that EMT may be unsupported between enclosures for lengths not exceeding 18"

I agree, you would still need at least one support. The fixtures would not count as a support in this situation.

OK then I should change my response to

If the fixtures are 10' apart or 18.1' apart you would still need a minimum of one support between the fixtures.

I think that you meant 18.1 inches. ;)

I might be reading too much into this question, but I'll ask anyway. I'm "cornfused" by the way you worded the question. Is this EMT being used for the actual wiring for the lights, or are they just "dummy" pieces of EMT to hang the lights using jack chain?

why would you want to hang a piece of EMT between hanging light fixtures..asseticly that would be bad and functionality it would be a maintenance nightmare..I think it would be poor design..

O.K. we can go the other way!:D We are not on '08 nor does it look like we will be for some time if at all!

Per art 358.28 emt shall be securely fastened in place at least every 3' plus exp 1 (5') and exc 2 for emt fished. If you have an installation where the fixtures are chain hung would emt be securely fastened in place if also supported by a chain and perhaps a mini? The whole lighting system could swing and sway in the wind or when relamping.
