IMHO I think the dissipated energy is dissipated as heat, but... the definition of a Surge is for an extremely short period of time. A time so short that the material wouldn't have a chance to absorb the heat or radiate the heat.

Of course - that’s correct.

I was responding to someone who claimed MOVs didn’t convert the energy to heat.

It experiences I squared R heating from current flowing through it but the majority of the heat is absorbed by the surge source since it just shunts the surge to ground.
