Mostly a matter of curiosity.

If swine flu gets bad in your area, what precautions do you plan to take to protect your employees?

Close down for a few weeks?

Provide masks and gloves as PPE?

Provide for prophylactic medical treatment?

Is this a workplace hazard as defined by OSHA?

That's a good question. To date we have no immediate plan at work. IMO as it stands right now the entire episode has been over hyped by the media.

Swine flu questions

Guys -all I can say is it is easy and unfortunately strangely reassuring for some of us to chalk this up to media hype--the old media driven cry wolf story-however what if it is a situation worthy of genuine concern-and what if you see a family member fall ill while you stand by and say it's nothing.-Do you want to live with that thought?
Wake up!Sometimes the wolf is really blowing down the house-the house that you your family and friends are living in or working in or inspecting.
Let me ask you-what do you stand to lose by trying to be ahead of the game and treat this as a legitimate problem-as opposed to being a hard head and roll the dice that it's some media hyped event--I know what I stand to lose--it might be my wife or son.

"You rolls the dice ,You pays the price".

Ditto, and please don't take this as a racist comment. A lot of us work around construction sites that employ a lot of people from south of the border. To the best of my knowledge it originated in Mexico. The first US death confirmed from this flu was a Mexican child. I am taking precautions.

I was reading in today's paper that 36000 people die from regular flu related sickness every year, is that not a PAndemic? That is the USA only.

As of now, I have a set of masks in the truck. If it gets bad we'll go do some old work in an unoccupied house.

Risk management at Southern Methodist University in Dallas TX is watching this very closely. They have a plan in place from back when we were watching the bird flu. As yet, no action has been taken. The health center sent an email... standard stuff, wash your hands often, don't touch your face, cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough... that's it so far.

It is media hype they want and need a buzz of the week word. That does not mean it is not serious or should be laughed at but the media over hypes everything. We are going to have a blizzard and we get 1/2".

How many people die from the flu every year in America......36,000, 100 a day on average, you never hear about this.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pandemic

If that said 3.6 billion that would qualify as a "pandemic".
I do not like having the media report on this type of stuff because they're like little kids in a candy shop. They can't help themselves.
