Is there a minimum sq footage for a closet when you are required to install a switch rather then a pull chain flourecent. I thought I had read it some where but its not in the NEC I thought maybe it was the IRC. Greatly appreciate some help. Thanks

There is no requirement for a light or even a switch if you decide to install a light. But I don't think the homeowner would appreciate the light being on all the time. ;)

The OP is from the chicago area-- perhaps you need to check the local requirements. No telling what is required there.

thank you for the quick response. I hope to be on this forum a lot more in the future. I used to be pretty quick with my code knowledge but i've been out of school for quite awhile now I hope this may be a good refresher. Any helpful continuing education tips that I may find online would be great to know about. Thanks

Can you provide the local code section that requires that?

Pierre,

Man, you got big ones! Rocko and Bruno may coming knocking at your door to "explain" the whys, of Chicago code.

When I apprenticed for 6 month's there in the 80's, I asked the super one day why I never saw an inspector?

He just smiled, and said, "You haven't been drinking in the right places".

I just said, "Oh okay".

He said, "Anything wrong?"

I said, "No, just curious".

He said, "You're pretty sharp."

Municipal Code of Chicago Relating to Electical Inspection as of Feb. 7, 2000.

18-27-210.70(a)(2)(d) At least one wall switch-controlled lighting outlet shall be required for all closets over 5 ft2 (0.47 m2). Closet lights shall be permanently installed lighting outlets.

Rocko and Bruno would not be able to find me, I would hide in the 5 sq ft closet, way too small for them. ;) Where there would be no light for them to see me.

Take a look at
410.8(D)(1)-(4) - 2005
410.16(C)(1)-(4) - 2008

You will see that based on the minimum shelf dimension of 12 inches, there will most likely not be enough space to install any fixture at all.

Then in
410.5 & 410.6 - 2005
410.11 & 410.12 - 2008

You will see that there are still some requirements that will be restrictive as to location.

Quog

In answer to your question, I think that the smaller size closets are restricted in regards to the type of fixture installed.
