I have a 100Amp sub-feed to a remote building. I am running 4/0 to due to the voltage drop. The maximum wire size for the lug on the main breaker is 1/0. I have a pull box 40' from the breaker, can I down size the wire to 1/0 at this point? I don't want to overfill the panel with lug splices if I don't have to.

Sure you can downsize anywhere but the closer to the panel the better.

ILSCO offers reducing lugs, they really do not use that much space. There should be no problem using the JB as long as you have sufficient space.

Where did you come up with that? He didn't mention single or 3 phase nor the voltage.

OK, my bad 1/0 would be good for 283' at 240v 1ph to cover vd.
4/0 would be good for 575'.
IF that is what he is working with.
