I ran across the test question below. I don?t think I agree with the answer that was shown but want to see what others have to say.

An all-electric home has a laundry area located in a kitchen closet. What is the minimum number of branch circuits serving this kitchen?

A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 5

Re: Test Question

If it was the logical answer asuming their calling the closet part of the kitchen and not a laundry or utility room, it has to be five.

Re: Test Question

it says one addition circuit for laundry in addition to 210.52 f
210.52 called for 1
so answer is 2 :D
This is whats wrong with tests.
The kitchen needs 2 and the laundy could be read as 1 or 2
so answer could be 2,3,or 4

Re: Test Question

Two will make for a pretty dark kitchen Bob :D (there was no mention of "small appliance" here)

I'd vote for 4 (if the closet is a genuine closet type closet standing on its own independent of the "kitchen" proper)

2 - 20A SA
1 - 15/20 ceiling light(s) [can't be on SA's]
1 - 40/50A stove [they did say "all electric"]

That's a pretty minimal kitchen...

Re: Test Question

This is a totally unfair question.
ok 1 for range 2 for sa 1 for light
now what about this washer ,its not in the kitchen it is in a closet.
Didn't we argue this closet thing last week.a bed room is a bedroom and the closet isnt in the bedroom neither was the bathroom.
Question like this are used to knock scores down.
If my score was only 1 question from passing i would demand a review and use a lawyer if needed

Re: Test Question

Ya I realized that it's one circuit after I said it.

If this house is in the north it better have a big basement to hang the clothes out to dry, with no dryer.

Re: Test Question

Well they did say min. and dryers are not required nor are dw ,pigs,or seperate frig
The test are not wrote by electricians
They are designed to fail 80%
And if any question is answered correctly by 50 % it never appears again
I believe that was from mike holt.
I took his master course 8 years ago
Well worth it
I would argue that the room is now a laundry and not a closet or even a pantry.
There are some fine electricians in here and they will all have differant answers
If i put TOILET in this kitchen closet will they call it a bathroom or still hold out that its a closet?
We need an icon for grrr

Re: Test Question

OUTLETS REQUIRED
210 50 (C)
If the only way to dry clothes is with an electric dryer because there is no gas, I believe it is required.

Re: Test Question

There is no place that it calls for a dryer just because you have a laundry.NEC is not about practical it is about min safe wiring.
This so called closet is not part of a kitchen
At the point you put in a laundry outlet it just became exactly that, a laundry
Now what are we saying i have a kitchen that includes washing facilities?
Well i have seen that!!!!
This is a totally bogus question that has several answers.
We can rule out A=2 AND B=3, ,C=4 might work
if we say 1 for lighting 2 for sa and 1 for range.
Guess is they want D=5 because they think the washer is in the kitchen

Re: Test Question

I'd agree this is a lousy question loaded with word traps designed specifically to produce wrong answers rather than test actual knowledge of the code.

The mention of this laundry and closet are completely unrelated to the question - they're a canard and should be ignored.

"all electric" and "kitchen" appear to be the only truly relevant data here.

Seriously, Who would "forget" to put a stove circuit in an all electric place? Jeez, get real. Likewise, who's going to "forget" to put in lights? Maybe some real green helper might slam'em in on the SA's when you're not looking, but anyone even thinking about taking the test would know better...

There are some 120V dryers though (slow and not terribly effective but they exist). I think you could serve one of these and a washer with a split feed duplex and a multiwire...and the multiwire can be considered "a circuit" (singular).

Re: Test Question

Ok where in the code did it say i gotta have a range?Total electric only means that every thing i put in is electric, well NEC never said i must have a range ,did it? im risking eggs but my 02 book is in truck and its freezing here in fl down to 40s
Building code might require a range but this test is on NEC so unless the test stated to use a certain building code the range is not in this kitchen.
Maybe im a vegetarian or use electric skillet or microwave, toaster oven.
Now i could make B=3 fly
By noon sunday we will get lots of answers and i will get egged again
