I remember working tract housing as an apprentice. Back then, at least with the builder we were working for, you either got a center light in the bedroom, or you got one half of one outlet switched (always the closest outlet to the switch, after all wire costs money) and a closet light on a pull chain. Under no circumstances was a room to have both.

Check your local bldg code
Here ('97 UBC) natural light is required in all habitable rooms except kitchens. They may be provided with artificial light.
bathrooms, closets, halls, storage or utility spaces are not habitable.
So all you need to pass is one luminaire in the kitchen, if you don't have any windows.

In CA, our energy standards kick in and you have to provide high efficacy luminaires in certain locations. Pretty much you have to install luminaires everywhere except a bedroom and a hallway (going by memory here). There are some trade offs.

Yeah Now I am in the fast paced field of tract housing ,is that where I want to be no but as situations evolved that is where I am :D ;)

At 48 tears old,with cervical stenosis and looking at a hip replacement in 3 months I doubt there is much I can change now !!!!
Giving it all to do all over ,well hind sight is 20/20 :D :D

All that time on a ladder head cranked up or squatted down has taken its toll .
Too late for me but you younger sparkys take heed.Get out there.If you intend to be somebody don`t wait I did and what has it got me? 4 am and eating percocets and a doc appt at 12 45 ;) :p

As an old inspector in southern california used to say as he limped his way through his inspections (he had a hip problem)

THESE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MY F-ING GOLDEN YEARS !!!!!!!!

Very good guy VERY good inspector

dont remember ever seeing a light meter in his pocket
