The sister of the girlfriend of a friend of mine requested a quote for the following work:

1) Replace the existing overhead 60amp service with a new 200amp.
The riser is around 15'.
2) Replace all of the two wire receptacles with new 3 wire.
3) Install a ceiling fan in the master bedroom.
4) Cut in a GFCI in the bathroom

I just checked with my friend and he said she found someone to do the project for $1,100.00. I just laughed and so did he.

Good luck passing inspection. Since the meter socket is so old the meter will not plug into a new meter socket thus the need for a permit. ComEd will not install a new meter until the AHJ signs off on the service.

The girl will probably have to pull the permit. This happens all the time . You found out that someone would do the job for $1100.00 but what will the end price be when things go aray?

Well, that's not the only reason to pull a permit.

I guess they don't mind working for free.

I'm sure the work they do will be top notch, first quality stuff. ;)

over $125k/yr.

thats all you can ask for in the south

Dude, there is a reason you have "nut" in your screen name. That thinking is why you say it's all you can ask for

I don't know how many outlets you're replacing. I doubt I'd do 2+3+4 for $1100, but #1 is really funny at $1100.

If you raised your prices a bit, you might get a day or two off a month to relax at the lake and STILL get plenty of work

The price of a permit where I work for a service change is a min of $60.00 in most areas . That would eat away at the $1100.00 just to start.

Its called a side job.$500 in material and $600 in your pocket tax free.We have no state license and very few municipalitys that require anything more than $50 bucks for a business license so this is about what is charged around here.We did service upgrades for $1500 but its been a while sinse we won a bid so we are moving more to comercial work because the side jobbers will not try and tackle it.

break it down
phone $80.00 X 12 = 960.00
cell $100/00 x 12 = 1000.00
fuel 1200.00 x 12 = 14400.00
0il change $50.00 x 4 = 200.00
truck payment 400.00 x12 = 4800.00
tires 150.00 x4= 600.00
truck insurance 2000.00
truck general maint 500.00
tool maint,repair,replacement 1500.00
total 25960.00
helper wages 9hr x2080 hrs 18720.00
total 44680.00
so you are down to 80 0000.00 and still have workers comp, payrole taxes, liability insurance ,unemployment insurance not to mention yor unbillable hours.

Easy now your doing that high level math, and like he said it does not matter how much it costs for something in the South you have to bill what ever they will pay.

you cant add helpers wages and wc into that because the $150 wasnt in the $125k figure.

I dont do small jobs like that anymore because im a little bigger now with more OH, mostly commercial new construction, I lose aprox 95% of my bids so im not low. back when I started out with just 1 truck and a helper I could have made plenty doing this job as stated. and I have succesfully grown into a 2 crew business in 5 years.new homes are wired here for $2.50sq. average journey pay is $13-15 if you are lucky. things are cheaper here in SC, heck I just paid $129k for my 1700 sq/ft house on 3 acres with a pond and workshop. this aint NY. city employees average $19k /year

It seems some contractors should just mail a check to potential customers when they call. It is cheaper that way in the long run

Likewise, but you have to take into consideration that gas is SO much cheaper in the south & cell phones are for girls. As long as the guy has a satellite dish & a new pickup it doesn't matter how many teeth are left in his wife's mouth.
