The old forum format was better

Now I have to navigate through 15 different topic areas to read whats going on. If it takes too long to navigate, members with answers, advice, or comments won't be as likely to reply to postings. Maybe two or three catagories would be OK, but 15???
Does anyone else feel this way?

I agree that it's different, but I think if we give it a chance, we may grow to really like it.

Re: The old forum format was better

I'm not "dis"ing it totally, just seems less user friendly -- too "compartmentalized"

I'll try to make my brain evolve...

Re: The old forum format was better

It'll be nice having the topics categorized, but I think it will make keeping up much harder too.

Also, a General category is needed, for topics such as this one...

I like it so far. If you have a specialty it should make it easy to get to the topics that interest you. Will wait and see. :)

This is the second transformation this board has gone through. I didn?t like the last layout at first but got use to it very quickly. The same will happen with this one if everyone gives it a chance. ECN has categories (while not as many) and does very well. Unfortunately, a change like this caused the death of the IAEE board. We shall see!

Re: The old forum format was better

:) Here is a link that will display the "Most Recent Topics" in all of the different forum categories. Most Recent Topics

It's the perfect page to bookmark. You will be able to quickly scan one page that covers all of the different areas of this forum.

We also have several new features available on this new forum the you will notice and I'm sure that you will get familiar with the layout.

Let me know if you need anything or have any suggestions so that we can make this forum better.

Thank you,

Re: The old forum format was better

I also liked the old format better. Having separate Subject Categories sounds good in theory but it's already starting to fall apart. Someone just posted a NEC question regarding securing NM cable in the Electrical Contracting and Estimating category. It's going to be very dificult keeping everying it the proper pigeon hole, if we even know what the right hole is.

This is as I feared. The same thing Chaski did with the Home Machinists forum.
Danny, IS IT TOO LATE TO REVERSE THIS DECISION?

To find an answer to a specific question, it is best to have a good search function. Or else, post your own question. But if you post in a narrow category, a lot of people will miss it.

To me, the value of a forum is like a magazine. You get a table of contents and read what seems interesting. But if everything is hidden in arbitrary categories, a lot of good stuff will be missed.

What's up with "Junior Member" under the names, and what is this "rate member" link, I come here to have fun and learn, now I am going to be graded,No thanks

I liked the one category system I think there will be problems with which category to post a question.

On a positive note the new page for posting replies is great with the Instant Gremlins, USB code and the preview post link

Re: The old forum format was better

Change is good but I felt the other format was easier to use. The different topics on one page would help jog my memory about information I needed to look for. Even still, this is the best electrical trade forum I have found. I have learned so much by just reading the different topics and responses. That is why I like many topics on one page. Please keep up the good work as it will help ensure our trade practices remain at the highest quality.

Like Danny said using the Most Resent Topics will act like the old forum.

It might help the same questions being asked over and over.

The ratings might make us think a little before we give our opinion.

Re: The old forum format was better

The setup of the old forum was definately easier to navigate. But there are some better features on this one. It will now be much easier to track down "imposters" and do away with them. Let's just see if any of them show up on this new forum.
We all should be able to adapt. They've even all ready made changes to this forum. On the main screen they had a column for the moderators of each topic, now that's gone. The same old routine does sometimes get boring.

Seems like a user friendly forum and a well thought out format,,But...Junior members? Rating each other? What's next,...testing to see if you're even qualified to answer a post?
