I remember reading a passage in an old NEC about telling the voltage of a conductor by touching it with your fingers. I can't remember the year or section, it may have been as old as 1905.

This is for a class on test equipment I am giving. If anyone can assist me with the year and article I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I don't think that was ever in the NEC, but it was in older editions of the "The Electrician's Handbook". I think it was in there in the 40's.

Cool, thanks!

Now, what relationship did the Handbook have with the NEC? Was the Handbook used as text?

Thanks again!

The NFPA didn't make an NEC handbook unitl 1968 (the small green one in the center of the pix). Before that, it was Croft's AEH or Wiring for Light and Power, or the National Electrical Code Handbook by Abbott.

1936 American Electrician's Handbook. Page 48.
I have a copy of the 1948 American Electrician's Handbook Sixth edition, based on the '47 NEC, Terrel Croft et. al., McGraw-Hill Book Co.

The passage Ken (480) shows in his image, above, is still in the copy I have.

I also have the Thirteenth edition (1996) and it is absent.

My dad always tested with his fingers. 240V, 120V he didn't care-- he said it was harder to feel DC voltage than AC voltage.

I don't know if I agree.

I have been shocked with both AC and DC, up to 25,000 volts (from both automotive ignitions systems and hi-pot cables) and I think it pretty much depends on the voltage and the environment.

The first time I got nailed by a car coil I jumped and smacked my head on the inside the hood. For the longest time I thought they put the pad on the inside of the hood for safety.

I'm interested in seeing the next, Section 116, I saw the word "tasting" now that looks like some bad advise.
