Dave, I am just blue sky thinking. It would be possible, maybe not practical though, to use solid state switches controlled such that the switches open and close at the optimum time.

You're thinking outside the box which is not very common. Good idea. What you suggest has possibility as the price of the solid state stuff is more affordable today.
