Two grounding rods on a solar panel system?

Hello, Guys,

I am installing a small, 3KW solar panel system. This is my first solar install. The panels and the system equipment are grounded with a grounded rod and bonded to neutral. The inverter has provisions for 240V in (to charge the batteries with AC) and out to the house. I want to connect inverter?s 240V input to a feed from a sub-panel, which is about 70 feet away and has its own grounding rod, bonded to neutral. The whole system is not required to be to any code and will not be inspected.

My questions are:
  1. Should I connect the two grounding rods, meaning ? should I run a GEC from the sub-panel and connect it to solar?s AC grounding bar?
  2. Should I disconnect the bonding at the solar side?
The inverter?s manual says ? using two grounding rods - to disconnect the bonding and to connect the two rods using wire with the same size as the battery bank wire. In my case, this would 4/0, which would be ridiculously expensive. I don?t think such an over-kill is necessary. Any suggestions, please.

Thanks,

Luby
