I have some Uniden GMR855-2CK handheld radios, they work pretty good, probley get 1/2 to 3/4 mile in the city due to buildings, trees, and power lines. Im sure they would get a couple miles easy in an open area. Some areas around me other people use them and they can cut in on you when your talking, so heres what Im going to get next....

These are a monthly contract type of service, correct? I had someone else tell me of this technology, but he was on a plan that was around $35 a month. Is this along the same line?

We usually use Motorola VHF radios. Although they're very expensive they're only thing that really works in a high rise building.

Mrs. Donovan -- mentioned as Charlie Brown's teacher, on 2/17/66.
Miss Othmar, later Mrs. Hagemeyer -- Linus' favorite teacher.
Miss Halverson -- Linus' new teacher, after Miss Othmar is fired during a strike. (She later reappears, sending poor Miss Halverson into comic-strip limbo.)
Miss Swanson -- mentioned as Peppermint Patty's teacher, on 12/8/69.
Peppermint Patty also had another teacher, named Miss Tenure, that most notably accused her of stealing a box of gold stars from her desk.

What do I win?

as far as I know, there is no contract, you just buy the radios and start using them.

Sorry for so many questions, I am getting hits on this from all angles/other forums, and what not.

What is the listed range on these things???

Whatever they claim it to be, you can be sure it's actual range has been multiplied by 4 or 5. Remember, Madison Avenue just loves phrases like "Up to...."

they are supposed to be equivelent range of any FRS/GMRS radio, you have to realize that none of these radios go more than a couple miles under normal conditions, 25 or 30 mile claims are if you were over calm open water or if you were both on mountain tops across from each other.....

I have used VHF radios, they are excellent! but you pay for it, I think you have to have a license, and you get your own private frequency dont you?

They're similar to these:

They're rather expensive when compared to FRS band devices. We might actually use UHF band I can't really remember.:) I think that the UHF may have greater range within high rise buildings.

A company I worked for at one time used radios similar to those, and we even paid for a repeater tower for a while, and we could communicate all over the city and into the rural areas around town. then cell phones came around and the radio kinda fell the wayside....

Thank you all!!!!

Thank you all!!!!

I was ready to place an order tonight, but after all of the helpful info. that I have received from everyone, I am going to ride the purchase out and see what other kind of hits I get.

I can't thank you all enough. I am still all ears.

Do you have to have licensing for the UHF models you use Trevor?

You guys are great! Thank you all so much!

Remember the sarcasm I replied to about hunters using the camo version? Well, after asking my brother about the licensing, I told him about the camo model. He paid $125 for his awhile back that were the top of the line, yet were stated for a max. of five miles. I told him about the camo version of the TalkAbout's I was looking at, and that they were only $65, guess what he wants know?

Where can I get them???? Hope he never loses them in the woods!!!!!

Partially true. You do need a license for GMRS, but you can use FRS for business use.

Family Radio Service (FRS) is one of the Citizens Band Radio Services. It is used by family, friends and associates to communicate within a neighborhood and while on group outings and has a communications range of less than one mile. You can not make a telephone call with an FRS unit. You may use your FRS unit for business-related communications.
