Can a 12/2 UF cable directly buried be used to feed a pool pump motor?

The way I interpret the code the answer is no.

Electrical inspector says it’s an approved install using it.

I read it as being limited to use within buildings.

Column I’m using is
Pool associated motors: from branch circuit OCPD to motor.

Thanks

Questionable at least. Corrosive location ?
(1) General. Wiring methods installed in the corrosive environment described in 680.14 shall comply with 680.14(B) or
shall be type MC cable listed for that location

Used to require an insulated EGC, now, if not in a corrosive area, any chapter 3 wiring method is allowed. Funny part is pool pump circulation area is considered corrosive. I would say not allowed.

Pump and motor are free standing outside on a concrete pad.
Is a corrosive “area” considered confined or enclosed?
