Re: Underground UF Installation

Thanx for the input guys...

Iwire,
I see your point of view and when installed with GFCI protection, the installation should be safe. I never said listed, just approved ;)

Pierre,
I asked the supply house for a NUCC product and they don't stock it. Said it is mostly used for street lights...probably that stuff I've seen the POCO useing around here with only a black and white wire in it. The non metalic pipe I saw the POCO useing was black in color and similar to irrigation pipe.

j_erickson,
I too, told the GC that my fear was that future excavations may mislead someone into thinking that it is a irrigation pipe and that someone may get hurt cutting the pipe.

If the installation was marked properly with caution tape, it would help.

I will ask the inspector of wires for his input tomorrow.

Re: Underground UF Installation

The product you're referring to that a POCO uses as a sleeve, is also used to facilitate the installation of fiber optic cables in direct burial situations. (As well as manhole to manhole through concrete or plastic 4" ducts) Called innerduct. Usually 1& 1/4" though 1", 3/4" and larger sizes are available. It is not unlike irrigation pipe, though the wall is much thicker, and the interior often has a coating to reduce drag resistance. There are a series of connectors and couplers available for each size to create an airtight run that allows you to install a fiber cable with an air compressor instead of pulling equipment.

We used it to blow an 864-fiber cable through the Amtrack train tunnel from 11th ave NYC to Weehawken, New Jersey, then again from Weehawken to the tunnel terminus.

Mike that is your opinion it is no more a fact than mine. :)

The only difference is my opinion uses common sense. :)

Re: Underground UF Installation

Just following up with this discussion...

I've asked the local Inspector of Wires if he would allow irrigation pipe with UF wire snaked through for wiring these post lights and he was quick to answer YES
