UPS system

In the time of Plato and Aristotle it was quite possible for a man to know everything there was to know. They had all the data available somewhere in their heads. In 2008, it is impossible to have all the data on anything.

What sort of UPS you talking about, in particular? Lead acid? Flywheel? Whta type of application? I have a wee one sitting on the floor under the desk I'm sitting at, but I don't suppose that's what you want to talk about.

(I want to reply to the other thread entitled "UPS system" but its closed, so I'll put it here.)

What ?

Send me a list of questions and I will answer anything you care to know and send you pics (weak drawing I completed).

1- what types of UPS and how to chooose
2- how it will connected to the generator and it needs isolation transformer or not (because of the harmonics)
3- what will happen in case of power failure

1. Basically there are 2 categories of UPS Rotary and Static
Rotary are Motor Generator Sets using rectifiers to charge batteries, and the batteries run a DC motor which turns a generator. Another rotary type is a Flywheel UPS where a AC motor turns a flywheel and the flywheel turns a generator and in the event of a power outage the flywheel drives the generator for a few seconds to allow time for the site generator to come on line.

Under Static there are 3 categories:
  • Stand By: These are the cheap UPS sold at box stores and have no real purpose so I will not elaborate much except to say they are just a small charge to keep a battery floated and a square wave vibrator type inverter.
  • Line Interactive: Are types of UPS where the inverter/charger interacts with the AC line to buck, boost, or replace incoming AC power as needed to maintain voltage control.
  • Dual or Double Conversion UPS Input power is first converted to dc via rectifier(s). The DC is used to charge the batteries and constantly operate the inverter at full load

It is up to the engineer to decide what type.

2. This question does no make much sense because site generators typically supply the whole facility via transfer switch and the UPS is connected via a panel in the building. With that said a UPS of any size has to be carefully designed and matched with the generator. Large UPS usually have communications with the generator to tell the UPS the site is going on generator and has special circuitry in the rectifiers to WALK-IN the rectifiers gradually. What I can tell you is the generator as a rule of thumb needs to be 2 X the output of the UPS input power requirements.

3. Huh? Well we hope the loads on the UPS keep right on ticking and never know the site lost power. Further we hope the generator starts up and takes place of utility power before the batteries in the UPS discharge and the "ON" light goes out on the equipment and everything gets real quite.

OP refer's to Gas Plant......UPS would only be sized to bring about an orderly and controlled and safe shutdown. Not operate the plant until power restored.

Well I don't pretend to know what a gas plant would need to shutdown, but the design process is th esame for any UPS, you need to know what the size of the load is and how long you need to supply that load with batteries. Since the question is generic I can only give genric answers.
