Re: Well Casing Grounding

I have pulled over 100 well pumps with wiring shorted to the well casing. This occurs almost always within 20 ft of the pump motor. The torque (twisting) that occurs when the pump starts is what causes this to happen.

It is agreed that many of these pumps have been in service for a long time and that it takes many many starts for the wires to eventually rub bare.

Anyone who has put heat tracing on a pipe knows how hard it is to keep it close to the pipe. Try this with wires attached to the well pipe as you are lowering it into the well.

A grounded well casing is the answer.
