You have a friend of 5 years that is licensed for residential only.
But you have to bid against them all the time on commercial jobs. And they seem to be charging almost half what I would charge.
And they don't get permits.:-?

How is he doing bid work without getting permits? Most of bid work in commercial is working for a general contractor and the GC must permit the work and then the electrician has to sign in as the electrician of record.

For one guy to work without a permit means the whole job is being done without a permit so I would feel free to turn them in.

Friends are over rated anyway.:grin:

It's work for owners of companies. Not new buildings of commercial work.

I have bid on the jobs and not got the jobs. To find out later he is doing the work.

Sounds like you need to ask your "friend" when he got his commercial classification.

If he committed a crime such as rape or murder, would you turn a blind eye just because he's a friend?

Business is business. He need to be licensed and permitted. And working without either is a crime in many states.

If he's really a friend you should talk to him about liability. What happens if one of these places burns. They are going to start pointing fingers and no permits or inspection is going to go very badly for him. Maybe you can work something out where you get the bids and he gets to work for you. Maybe while he's working towards his commercial certification?

That's not how I take it. I've just been fighting the issue with my self.

Roger's response was to simply provide one avenue of action. He did not state whether or not he felt you should take it. Had he provided a link to the NRA, would you feel he's suggesting you should buy a gun and shoot someone? He didn't say 'Do this" or "Don't do this". A link, nothing more. He very well could fall on the side of "Forget it, it's not worth the trouble" side of the fence, or even Que, Sera Sera (re: who cares?)

From my original post. If some one posted "here NRA."

I would think just what you stated above.
BTW thanks for the NRA link I favorited it.

If the guy is this bad -- turning him in will only be temporary --he'll find someone to pull his permits and most municipalities aren't gonna get into policing workers. I have seen this same situation, along with the illegal opposition installing work not meeting building specs and sometimes against local codes. But i made some money fixing his mistakes and little by little the customers ran him off!!!

That's a good point.

I'm not going to say I never did "sidework" coming up as an electrician prior to obtaining my license, but I will say I never directly stole a job away from a legit guy doing things legitimately because I could have homeowners pull permits to keep the cost of the job down etc etc....In other words I feel he is directly responsible for you losing jobs by working the system and breaking the law.

With that being said, do you feel he is stealing food off your plate by doing this?

If so, I would not consider him much of a friend.

your bidding to low

your bidding to low

Talk to him quietly at the supply house ( but tactfully inform him he is D.A. and needs to raise his prices) He's not your friend but a friendly competor.
You two are playing poker, allways pull the bluff and tell him your bidding higher.
