Whats your Idea for Installing Under Cabinet Lighting?

I'm a fan of the three gang behind the fridge myself. I sure hope troubleshooting isn't necessary back there, it's just splicing color-for-color. :D

And if push comes to shove (literally) I'd rather be dealing with a box at waist-level after shoving a fridge out of the way, than working inside a cabinet. To each their own. :)

We've done it both ways (fridge vs cabinet), it just depends on #of wires. Most of the time I can get away with inside cabinet or no junction box at all, just a deep box at switch location. Years ago we did a house with 14 under and over cabinet lights so there were 2 j-boxes behind fridge. I am getting ready to trim a kitchen now that will have the xenon lights. She wants the fixtures at the front of the cabinet as opposed to at the wall  So my plan is to run 14-2 to the first fixture and follow the behind the front lip of cabinet with fixture cord from light to light. That way there is only one wire penetrating the wall at each location. (Multiple fixtures at 3 different cabinet sets.) She also wants strip receptacles below the upper cabinet instead of wall outlets (another   ) so coordinating all these wires and such is going to be fun. Praise God for T&M.

A basement here is known as in in-ground swimming pool, whether intentional or accidental.

Edit for funny looking grammar.

Depending on the layout, you can also install the boxes behind the laundry room or half-bath door, a nearby closet, in the pantry, etc.

If I see under cabinet lighting called undercounter lighting one more time I am going to scratch my eyeballs out.

I am not joking about this.

That's probably one I will have to correct myself on. I have the same feelings towards "hot water heater." A guy I learned under once asked me, "When was the last ime you had to heat 'hot' water." That question cured me.

As a side note, a pillow is really handy when installing under cabinet lighting:D .
I usually lie flat on the counter top.
I'm old, and it really helps the back.

I try to do the install when the customers not around, don't want them to think that I'm taking a nap.

Were's what I do:

At rough, stub out the 14-2 at 3/4" above the cabinet bottom, so the cabinet installer has to drill the bottom skirt for the wire. It's okay to loop from cabinet to cabinet in the wall.

At trim, mount shallow Wiremold boxes against the cabinet back, to use as junction boxes. Mount fixtures per instructions, and use hot-melt glue to afix wire to the cabinet bottom.

Slit 1/8" i.d. rubber tubing to act as grommets around the twist-out holes of the Wiremold box fronts to please inspector. Blank plates on the Wiremold boxes complete the install.

For those who will cite NEC violations, I went over them carefully, so fire away. :)

You mean the separately bushed hole for each conductor?

Does lamp cord qualify as open conductors?

LOL.....no.

Thats what I get for posting while running out the door.

I was trying to go for this one.

314.17(B)......the need for a connection to the box.

Larry....are the conductors in the box line volt or low volt?

Is there one you would recommend that would be a quality fixture and installation...also is there anything in Title 24 that would need to be concidered???Thanks, JB:-?

Remember that title 24 requires that 50% of the installed wattage (fixture rating, not actual bulb size), in kitchens, must be high efficiency.

I sometimes, if needed, put a horizontal outlet above the wall cabinet. If they have any trim on the cabinet you will never see it...Also it would make it easier to add extra undercounter:grin: or in cabinet light if needed..

I also don't do residencial...but in institutions they like under-cabinet lighting...I like to put a j-box in a remote location, I look for some where close that wont have allot of stuff to move when servicing...then I run a cable to each location and one of our fav's is xenon lights... we have even mask off the cabinets and counters and painted the short stub of NM to match the cabinets when it is a necessity to install on front side of cabinets but we normally stay to back of cabinet...I have seen rope lights used under cabinet as well...I have learned here and had a good laugh but I agree stay away from puck lights they generate allot of heat and can even discolor the stain on cabinets...
