The NEC states that service equipment disconnecting means shall not be located in bathrooms. Does this apply to half-baths? for example, a toilet/lavatory only.

Just curious. Does this mean it would be okay to locate it in my room with just a tub/shower & toilet? Never thought about it, but sounds like it would be code compliant.

According to dictionary.com:

bathroom

n 1: a room (as in a residence) containing a bath or shower and usually a washbasin and toilet [syn: bath] 2: a room equipped with toilet facilities [syn: toilet, lavatory, lav, can, john, privy]

Larry we can not use an 'outside' definition of bathroom.

Is straight out of Article 100 of the NEC.

If the NEC defines a word we must use the NECs definition for application of NEC code sections. :)

A room with a toilet that didn't have a basin is a building code violation. A room with just a shower, it would seem, would be a permissable location for a panel. I don't think too many of such rooms exist.

First lets get something straight a room is an area that has a door in which it can be isolated from other areas,do we all agree on that ?
If that is true then what MD says is not true.I have done 100`s of homes with what we call a water closet (slang) toilet room (on print).
All the inspectors I know say once they enter an area that comprises a means to relieve oneself,wash when done or shower after each time they relieve themselves is a bath room no matter how you want to nit pic the NEC so no panel !!!!!

What about a shower room say in a school? There ar only showers in there.

However who cares what code says -- it is only a minimum requirement after all -- and is your only function in lfe to adhere to code with no regard to quality of work and reliability of equipment??

I can get junk fixtures out of Home Depot that have UL stickers on them. They fall apart or burn up in a year or two -- so what good is UL??

I guess the good things about putting a panel in the shower are
1. Make keeping the panel cleaner just open eer up and spray it down.
2. Makes cleanup from a suicide or accidental contact easier. Remove body turn on shower -- "all your troubles down the drain"

NO.Where does it say a door is required ?My dining room has no door between it and the kitchen and only a huge bar to seperate the kitchen from the living room.Yet they are seperate rooms.And yes there are plenty of them rooms with a door on them that only has a toilet.Now i am really confused,is it still a bathroom even if we cant take a bathin it.And in the backwoods part of KY my wife grew up without all them nice things like indoor plumbing.To take a bath they put a big portable tub in middle of kitchen floor.So what do we call this room while its being used this way ?

This was only allowed for the women folk. The men had two choices 1) run down to the creek, 2) jump in the hole of water in the middle of the pig pen.

Now if you choose the latter it is best to check out the color of the water and remember that yellow and orange means caution.

The creek is not a joke.Not uncommon to see a guy head to the creek with a bar of soap and a towel.If only it wasn't so cold there i would love to live there.Not many places left with people that are that good to each other and you can take there word to the bank.Getting a license to wire there was easy too.Takes about 10 minutes to fill the paper out.

I can see your one of the rich ones.Coal was all they could afford.At first i didn't believe any place could be that far behind the times ,but i been up there many summers and it's still about the same.Just be carefull not to drop the bucket down the well. ;)

We would use coal if there were any abounded mines around. All we have is a crosscut saw and a double bit ax.

The creek is about 100 yards down the side of the hill. Mom wants me to dig a new hole for the john before the ground freezes hard and we have to wait till spring.

First things first it is an area that is defined not a room.
