White - hot : black - neutral

I have an old farm house with "White - hot : black - neutral" written on the door of the main panel. And, in fact this is how the house is wired.
The existing panel is old and has too few spaces. I need to replace it and upgrade breakers to AFCI and GFI. But, what do I do about the white/black reversal? I can't rewire the whole house.
