Re: Whole House Rewire

Jeff, jobs like this can become a real sink hole for a one man operation. They are challenging enough to do with assitance. I wouldn't even think of doing a job like this without help, unless as the others have said you absolutely go T&M.

Sounds like you made the right decision by walking. And you should condsider becoming a plumber. :D

Re: Whole House Rewire

Jeff, there is a good chance that you did pick the wrong trade. In one of our continuing education classes it was explained why plumbers are doing better than electricians. In the last 10 to 15 years there has been a significant growth in the number of electrical contractors ( competing for work ) while the number of plumbers has stayed nearly the same. If there were the same number of electrician as in 1990 you could write your own ticket. For some reason people tend to shy away from plumbing and flock to electrical. It may have something to do with swan diving into a cess-pool.

Re: Whole House Rewire

I wouldn't be surprised if the cesspool factor had something to do with the lack of interest in plumbing. I get plenty dirty doing electrical work, but I generally don't have to deal with cesspools.

I think electrical work is probably physically easier to do, as well. I ran into a plumber on a job the other day, and he was telling me stories about how he used to have to move old cast-iron tubs by himself. Even now, they still have to lug porcelain tubs and toilets around. The heaviest thing I have to carry is a 250' roll of #4 copper.

The local IBEW has 450 licensed journeymen on Book 1, but when I looked at the plumber's union Web page, there was no mention of any members being out of work.

Still, I really can't complain. I do have plenty of work, and I make decent money doing it.

Re: Whole House Rewire

Sounds like this guy is a slum lord. He just wants the job done cheap so he can make his profit renting the joint out.

I would walk or tell him T&M and walls will be opened as deemed necessary........all wording put in the bid. Plus I would charge him a high deposit as well.
