Buckle Up
Buckle Up
So much for locking the original thread and having the last word.
I'm guessing that the title of both threads indicating that EC's should not be allowed to install voice/data wiring would strike a nerve if posted in a forum set aside strictly for electricians would compare to a few guys wearing white hooded robes and burning a big cross at an NAACP gathering.
I suggest we get past the stereotype insults and allow the hard drive space to deliver information like it is intended to.
I am not an EC. I don't do electrical. I don't want to do electrical. If I need so much as a ground wire run to use for my installs I go to the EC and request it. If I get called a Data Bi*** then it is usually in jest but in showing respect I get respect. Vice versa, If sparky asks me why I am doing something a certain way I show and tell both procedures and reasons. That is how it is done in the field or eye to eye.
Behind the keyboard is a totally different form of communication. Sparky or anyone else that knows what they are doing should be allowed to do it. The key is to know the application for your install. When I am charged with cabling responsibilities on a project I know what is expected to function in the end. There was an earlier reference to a 1300 square foot POS res where the EC would have home run everything to the outside interface but instead he looped the whole house. It doesn't matter because either way was and is wrong. Never loop or daisy chain anything, PERIOD!!! Home run is the way it is done correctly but not to the outside, run it to a central point inside the structure. Free Info Here, pay attention!! You can HR 24 Cat3/2pr to one measly 66 block and have massive flexibility. Imagine that, a $10 dollar component that can do the job of one of those high dollar POS wall enclosure units that you won't be able to close the door on in a few weeks.
A word or two on the NEC and/or local codes. Both the NEC and your local code enforcement have a necessary responsibility. Their existence is safety based not function based. Neither one give a darn about what will or will not work, their sole purpose is to keep YOU from killing someone, yourself or burning down Chicago again. If you desire to install voice/data then by all means follow the codes and guidelines. If you want to install voice/data CORRECTLY then follow the guidelines and KNOW YOUR APPLICATION.
Last word before I open this up to questions. I am a Phoneguy. A true DataBi*** is a computer geek. They are a whole new chunk of subject matter that we all could have a few beers and laugh at.
To all you EC's out there that work hard and do things correct:grin:
To the wanna be professionals who continue to hide behind territorial rights you think will always be there because some descendant of Jimmy Hoffa says so, Just remember how Toyota became a force to be reckoned with in the auto industry.
OK uwire, lock her down!
