Why SABC in Dining Rooms?

I have always run a dedicated 20 amp circuit for the entire dining room (receptacles). I have no doubt this is perfectly legit.

I just roped a small house. I ran two SABC's to cover the kitchen & reefer.

I ran a third SABC to run the Dining Rm. Not necessary, but practical.

Confession. One wall of the Dining Rm. was on an exterior wall. There was an exterior outlet on the opisite side of a stud. I roped this exterior outlet into the Dining Rm. outlet. Two feet of wire max.

Go ahead, hammer me. In my defense, I did this before talking to my boss about the lame apprentice. See my 210.52 thread. I did this before realizing my boss will back me up 100%.

Tell me, how many of you goys have never done this? The outlet was under a window. Now that I know boss will back me up, next time I will drill around and feed the exterior outlet fron another ckt.

More time, more labor, but it's O.K. with boss. I didn't know.

Now we know that is only done by you and no one else would even have thought of doing that until you brought it up,,,,,,,,,,,
Have you noticed that those outside outlets are almost always under a window off the dining room and are locked in by those steel shear panels on both sides. The ones that only let you drill one small hole through them in a spot that is nearly useless.

You may be out of luck when 2008 NEC is here. Here is art. 210. 12(B)

NEC 2008 Art. 210.12(B) said:
All 120 volt, single phase 15 and 20 amp branch circuits supplying outlets installed in dwelling unit family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, den, bedroom , sunrooms, rec rooms, closets, hallways, or similar rooms or areas shall be protected by a listed arc fault circuit interrupter, combination type, installed to provide protection for the branch circuit.

Now unless you want to have the arc fault feed the kitchen area, which the new code specifically ignores, then you will have to run a separate circuit to the dining room receptacles. I suspect a pantry is also absolved of this new regulation.

My uncle Edgar has a welder on his back porch so I propose that in 2008 NEC shold require a 50A 240 outlet on porches.

I never see anything in dining rooms except a table, chairs and MAYBE a lamp.

I Do live in a civilized area though :D

John, You might want to take that a step more. I live in TN  and my uncle Edgar would probably bring his welder into the dining room in cold weather.

And probably light a cigarette from the arcing. Which in turn heats the house on those cold nights. Good ole Uncle Edgar.

Fair enough... but to keep your food piping hot all you have to do is open the blinds!

I just hang around slow people to make myself look smarter:grin: I am roughing in a house now that I relocated an outside patio outlet because of this thread. Good timing.
