Thank you for the link.

I feel firms that make you dance through registration are doing themselves a dis-service. I'll register Monday.

The wind farm I am doing some work with, generates DC. At the bottom of the tower is an PWM inverter to 770VAC three phase and a setup transformer to 34.5KV. Several transformers are paralleled on each a circuit The 34.5kV circuits are then run to a collector yard where the voltage is stepped up to 138KV.

The site I saw was over several miles BUT NO WHERE NEAR THIS NUMBER.

I am told they are bird shredders? Or do the birds wise up. I mean how many times have you almost hit a bird only to see it pull an incredible escape maneuver.
I don't think they spin fast enough to shred any birds. At least not the ones I've seen up in Somerset, PA area.

They are big aren't they,

I drove past a large farm in Canada on vacation and got close enough to one to take a picture that showed how big the carriage was and you can see the transformer on the ground.

Bob the DC question was my thought based on wind speed and paralleling the units on line, Wish I could have found the DC to AC converter and connection to grid.
Electical contractor Magazine just did an artical on a wind powered gen site, and they described installation details of the 260 ft. towers pulling cables inside the towers straight down from the 1.5 mw. nacells.

Most of our turbines are 2.1 MW machines and they are ~280' to the top. The model that we primarily use has a ladder in the tower... making for a very fun climb to the top. There are platforms for each of the tower sections that you can rest on. It is great to climb out on top of the nacelle!
