Wire gauge tool needed.

Since they are plastic, one can do it hot without getting a shock or shorting stuff out.
Yeesh. Not me. I might be tempted to hold a plastic ruler next to the wire for a visual but the plastic calipers have a metal rod down their length. I can't picture many areas where I would gauge a live conductor with a caliper or gauge tool.

It's too cold to go look, but I am pretty sure the one I have has no metal.
My plastic vernier one has some kind of coat-hanger thick rod in a groove in the back for some stability purpose or something. My metal dial one is...metal.

you could essentially open it up all the way and nip off that rod. like Frank said, its there so that it can be used as a depth gauge.
