wire pulling lube

I like Ideal's product. Water soluble comes off easily, doesn't stain. I've never heard of "no lube" wire. Some wires are designed to have less friction, like THHN with it's smooth nylon jacket. Other wires like USE or XHHW have more rubbery insulation and can be very difficult to pull.

You mean something like SIMpull with the ridges?
Yeah I've used that. Comes in the big 1000 ft plastic container and pulls out like CAT 5 cable. Love that stuff. We used it all the time at the factory. I can't afford that kind of inventory as an independent contractor now.

Southwire has the Simpull Thhn, it has a slick finish, and the manufacturer says to not use lube with it.
Not to use lube or don't waste your money on lube because it's so slick? I think that it's the latter. You can use lube if you want to as it is not prohibited but also (according to Southwire) not needed.

Southwire Company, LLC guarantees that copper and aluminum SIMpull THHN® conductors, SIMpull XHHW-2® conductors, and SIMpull ® Power Cables can be installed without requiring the application of lubricant to facilitate pulling through PVC or metal conduit, provided that the instructions available on the Southwire website are followed. ..........

The guarantee is null and void unless the Contractor follows the instructions found in Southwire’s “Installation and Application Guide for SIMpull ® 600V/1000V Conductors” when installing the cable. The guarantee is valid only for installations where only Southwire SIMpull THHN® conductors, SIMpull XHHW-2® conductors, and SIMpull ® Power Cables are used exclusively. The guarantee will not be honored on any circuits/runs where Southwire product is pulled in combination with another manufacturer’s product.

If during installation, the performance of copper or aluminum SIMpull THHN® conductors, SIMpull XHHW-2® conductors, and SIMpull ® Power Cables is not equivalent to the performance standard of conductors or cables installed with conventional lubricant applied at the time of installation, Southwire Company will reimburse the Contractor for the direct costs incurred replacing conductors that did not meet such equivalent performance standard during installation. Under no circumstances, will Southwire be responsible for indirect costs, consequential damages, or incidental damages including loss of profit of revenue.

Actually years ago, it was printed on the spools “Do not use lube” so they must have changed it.
Yes, there was a big sticker on the spools that said something like: STOP! Do not use wire pulling lube. And then the fine print said something like unless you want to waste money.

Years ago we had an issue on a job when we first started using SimPull where someone told us we could not use lube, it was later determined that it wasn't needed but it also was not prohibited. I'm guessing that still is true.
