I had a helper drilling 3/8" holes in fence metal fence poles so I could bond them.

I went out a couple of times and gave him grief for taking so long, I went out again and he had gotten through the first one but the hole was oval shaped and the drill bit blue. :D

I had the same thing happen years ago. Helper drilled a 3/8" hole through 3" sch 40 black iron in reverse. I was impressed, to say the least. Some time later he was tapping a 1/4-20 and another guy stopped and watched. Then asked, "Are those left handed threads?"

To which he responded, "Nope!"

And the guy said, "Well then....you're gonna be tapping a long time." and walked off. :D

I was rolling.

I am impressed too, my guy was only drilling pipe a little thicker than EMT.

But a 3/8" hole in reverse through sch 40 black iron!

Your guy had some real determination. :D

That exact thing happened to me some months back. We ended up having to sawzall out 4" of the adjoining bedroom floor, and very carefully stapling and nailplating out homeruns, putting the adjusted chunk of floor back in. :D

Years ago I had a helper his name was Tony big boned 6 3 235 lb guy about 21.I had an old 3/4 in rockwell drill motor that had a toggle switch in the 1 in pipe handle on/off not momentary :D Funniest thing I have ever seen ;)

Allen, when I first bought my 18V drill, I was walking around on stilts, drilling high for runs in an apartment. It was a dropped ceiling, so I was just popping holes in the drywall up high, for runs between units.

In the kitchen I drilled through the drywall, then kept drilling to go straight through the OSB between units. It caught in the OSB and mashed my trigger finger down against a copper pipe, pinning me by my finger. It had to be 15 excruciating seconds before I wiggled free! :D

I know it had to look hilarious, since I was on stilts, I had no leverage to get pressure on the OSB to make it through, and then had zero leverage (plus distraction) to pull free! :D

My big nasty DeWalt I use for boring has this glitch. When it's under heavy load or jammed it locks on. I have know idea why. This things a real wrist breaker too.

Drills and rotary hammers have broken many hands wrists and noses.I always warn a green helper about them but at some point in time they forget and OWWWWWWWWWW ;)

I wont even let some guys use it. ;) It's just not a youngster tool. Anyone that does get to use it gets the run down.

Actually I wont let some guys use my screw drivers. The sharp edge on my straight is like that cause it's not a chisel or a crow bar or who knows what somebody might decide to use it for. Sometime guys don't realize that they can't get that screw out because there no arc in the head to match their screw driver blade.

My old Milwaukee (and the one I still use) came with a trigger lock button on the single speed trigger. It was real easy to lock the thing on just by grabbing the handle in a certain way. I had it only for a couple of weeks when it grabbed, tore out of my hands and started wrapping the cord around itself. I had to pull the plug to kill it.

A few minutes taking the handle apart and my linesmans pliers took care of that locking button. Now you will never see a drill with one, I guess I was just ahead of the times. :D

The new Milwaukees are easy to stop, as they're weak on power these days. My 18 volt DeWalt, however did a number on my thumb nail two days ago as it slipped off the square drive screw and punctured right through my nail. I cried like a little girl.

I used a rotary hammer in close quarters, punching holes for bullards to protect the panels, and instead of taking the hammer out when i released the trigger, i kept it in the hole. (insides are still spinning) silly me, it caught and started to spin with a jerk, pulled my arm out of the socket, and slammed it back in when I hit the wall. did i learn, not until it did it again 5 minutes later. I learned. I saw another guy throw the hammer about thirty feet he was so pissed off. wouldn't use it again except to drive ground rods.

One of the lessons about drills that i have used was about thirty years ago, doing plumbing and heating repair in NY, building plenums in place, by myself, screwing them together with those short and sharp hex self-tappers. Standing on the top rung of ladder, head and arms inside plenum, hand outside holding flap, wouldn't tap so i held it closer. Couldn't stop drill fast enough, caught middle finger, whole depth, no reverse on drill, 5/16 driver out of reach. I waited twenty minutes for someone to come by, but it became painful enough that I didn't think it could hurt worse if I just yanked it off. Boy, was i wrong.

There are so many lessons contained in those two experiences, that i can't assume that I have ever fathomed all of them.

I guess, though, that surviving the learning experiences is the main path to understanding for some of us.

One word: Ouch.

When I was working in the newspaper, I was cleaning and maintaining a stacker, which takes copies of newspapers off the conveyor and collects them, ejects them in counted bundles.

I had the stacker idling at a low speed, and saw all that nasty grease on the chain. Hosing it with a can of lubricant didn't help, so I grabbed a rag, and started spraying and holding the rag with my other hand. :D

Didn't cry, but was dang close. Well, involuntary tears. :D

We're using these RIGID drills for general wood boring.

They remind me of the Milwaukee 'Hole Shooter'.

They have a soft start and if you hit a nail, they absorb the shock and stop spinning.
My guys love them.

We also use Hole Hawgs for the bigger tasks.

At one time someone posted a link to a pictoral on how to sharpen an auger bit. I saved it but then lost it when my puter crashed. I wonder if anyone still has it?

First never sharpen the outside edges of the bit that cut--the spur and side lip. There are three edges you may have to sharpen--the spur, cutter and side lip. Your bit may not have a spur. The spur is a thin piece of metal that sticks up parallel with the screw point above the cutter. To sharpen it hold the bit by the shank or twist against a work bench. Using a flat file, sharpen on the front (as you view the cutting edge) and top inside edge of the spur. Never sharpen the outside. To sharpen the cutter and side lip, hold the bit upside down with the screw point sticking into a piece of wood. This gives you a clear view and access to the underside of the cutter and inside of the side lip. Using a small triangular or square file, sharpen the underside of the cutter and inside the side lip.

For those that have never learned how to do it properly,great tip to find :D

Back to bit sharpening:

I have seen little round stones about 1/4 inch diameter and 1/2 inch long for the Dremel tool. I have used them on chainsaws, but they should work nicely on auger bits. I found these at a Northern store.

BTW, you probably know this already, but you can sharpen chisels nicely with a bench mounted sanding disk.
