Old widow to a UN Ambassador (upon hearing of a power pole fire) while at her summer camp in northern NY: "There couldn't have been an electrical fire at the landfill. It's closed on Tuesday!" :D

Some EE's actually have more experience from/in the field then some Journeymen (union) Electricians (not many though I agree). Like one GF who wanted me to design a temp power system for a new construction high-rise (over 50 floors tall) and he only wanted to use 120V-20A #10 circuits from a distribution panel on the ground all the way up. Hmmm, can we say voltage drop?

Voltage drop? How could that be? You are going up. :)

When I was plant Electrical Engineer at a Hydro facility, we had a contractor's design engineer show up who had spent all of his 4 years experience with the company behind a desk. He was wanting to inspect the CTs on the 4160 VAC bushings behind the breakers but there were slide shields in his way to look. He pulls out his mechanical pencil and procedes to lift the slide shields up with it. I kicked him in the ribs to the wall and asked him if he really hated being a newly wed that bad. He looked at me half pi$$ed and half bewildered at my question. I told him that if he needed to do a visual on the 4160 connections and CTs we would provide him with an outage. He asked "why the hassle? my pencil is plastic." I had the Contracting Officer escort this clown out of the plant. This was after he had hooked up 125 VDC in a control panel to "test relays" while the Electricians were gone for the weekend. Not too big of a deal but he left it connected and left a note in the office trailer for the electricians, who have their desks in the plant. One of the electricians went to work and found the DC.

"mdshunk is banned"

The forum is privately owned and moderated by volunteers. They reserve the right to ban someone as they see fit. I tend to doubt that Marc was banned arbitrarily...I have faith that whatever the reason is, the mods made the correct decision.

How would that effect stopping? Starting I get, stopping should be effected.

"Stopping AND restarting" meant to indicate that after you lost the phase the motor will keep running but AFTER it is stopped you won't be able to restart it. Unless you are restarting while the motor is still rotating, like a belted cooling tower fan, or if the shaft is mechanically rotated while the voltage is applied. Three phase motor with two phase voltage can also be turning in either direction.

However, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

That is not to pass judgement over any of the moderators, even though I have had exchanges where I felt to be handled with an arbitrary power without having a recourse, but the rules of an open society is not seem to be practiced here. That is not to challenge the the Owners or his designee's right to run this forum ANY way they wish, but it should be pointed out that the fairness or lack of it is not transparent.

I also have to add that I am not defending Mark per se, since I've had my moments with him where I felt that he was out of line with his ad hominem, but I am defending the principals of fairness a democratic process.

Faith? Remember RR "trust but verify"?

Three phase motor with two phase voltage can also be turning in either direction.
Loosing one "phase conductor" of a three-phase system does not result in a two-phase voltage.

Normal system with three different line-line voltages: Vab, Vbc, and Vca
Loss of "phase conductor" C yields one line-line voltage: Vab

Not true the shell IS suppose to be Neutral and the bottom brass piece IS always to be the HOT.
Yes it is true. The light will still work even if the poarity is crossed. I know that the shell is suppossed to be neutral and the tab is to be the hot. So are you telling me that you don't think that the bulb will light up? Try it sometime. Actually I'll bet that at least one of your lights in your house is reversed polarity, but you won't know the difference.

why was he banned? what did he do?

From moderator Charlie B:

That is not a subject of which public comment can be made. If his previous posts show a current status of "Banned," then you may infer that something has brought about that action. The possible duration of such an action, and the possible reinstatement of his membership privileges, are private matters.
