I would have guessed 3 way.

And what makes you think that over a three way?

Certainly the first thought is 3 way. The other possibility is the wrapped wire being the hot and the other 2 being SL's for a fan/ light combo.

They all appear to be black conductors. If it was my 3-way one of them would be red.

If that is the case my question is why in the world a feed through wasn't spliced through on the rough. Seems terribly inefficient.

Ah, but we didn't rough this, the home team did, and has two-wire traveler threeways all over the place prior to arriving at this switch.

Only one is energized at a time. But I always run a neutral with mine.(except if feed and leg are in the same box.

A stacked switch is what I was talking about, or if it was a paddle fan a fan controller on the same strap.

But the suspense is killing me- what did it turn out to be?
