Pulling Socks

Is making your own head bad??? That how we use to pull everything we were doing big crap
No, but as Action Dave said, it isn't the most efficient, and it takes more wire for one thing. And IMO more prone to errors. A well made head can take half an hour or more and two people. Those Southwire grip are 5 minutes and I have never had one fail. And the head is generally smaller.

Yeah. We stopped using any type of pulling grips or baskets years ago for large conductors on large jobs. We just order the wire with the steel cable eyes crimped on at the factory. Making up a pulling head is a fast way to lose money.
That is a great way to do it. Already spooled on one reel also.

A good point probably just the old-school guy I used
It's not bad to make your own head, but it's faster and easier to use a sock. I've done both and

Yeah, the spot I used to work at would order those and then the the project manager said they cost too much. It’s cheaper to do make your own head.
That always counteracted my original boss, who always told me parts are generally always cheaper than your labor if you can get in and out as quick as possible, you save money regardless of the parts cost more

Unless you have a bunch of guys making minimum wage the crimps are cheaper in the long run. Also with guys making up the head there's always a chance of failures especially with the Chinese finger baskets types. Lose one pull mid stream and you've lost all of your profits.

You completely misunderstand what we are talking about. Pulling grips or socks are used for pulling large conductors through conduit. They allow the conductors to be attached to a pull rope.

Clearly I do not. And still don't. But thank you all !

Thank for that. can see what it is now (including UK product). .Not something we have used.

Very droll. We just do neat and tidy.
Picture the main service where all the circuits come from for the equipment you worked with. The main service will have huge conductors from the meter, transformer, etc. They have to get the large conductors to the panel somehow.
The "sock" that has been referenced is just a huge grip that goes on the conductors and tied to a rope.
The tighter you pull the tighter the grip gets. That's to prevent the conductors from slipping out during the pull.
Slang for the grip is Chinese Finger. I believe that was a form of torture the Chinese used.

That was not common in my area until after I retired, but it is a great way to make pulls.

I always think about all the stories the russian guys from my first company would tell me about '80's russia wiring methods.
Basically, pulling means you are not very efficient... they would lay wires directly in the concrete... its (literally) difficult to argue with that. "Sorry Alexi, we gotta put it in pipe".
I guess when the inspector is disguised as a soldier with a akm, you just get it done.

Thanks Mr Bill. It's over midnight here. I'll look tomorrow.............

And you just finished your last bottle of vodka.

That is no joke...
The boss had to tell some of the guys to cool it with the "russian breakfast"!
If im lying im dying... i need to say that some of those guys were some of the sharpest guys ive met... at least when they picked up on u.s. wiring methods.
:)

neither is fundamentally true. I learned early on to do the math and justify. Money is only one of the controlling factors. Local stock, time to acquire, failure rate, labor savings, local labor rates, an other factors all weigh in. When I want something I am already prepared to counter any dissent. Take the new Caddy Fire alarm boxes. They are between 20 and 27 dollars. But if I have speakers, the time spent getting a 4S box with an extension and no mudring to be perfectly flush with finish drywall often requires a 2x4 and a hammer, and a lot of extra time, some walls need to be opened. I will spend the $25 thank you.
