Business is Slow

resi market is very slow and competition is increased...commercial market is still good...commercial maintenance is steady...

The building department I work for issued 90 single family home permits between August - and December 2007. This was down from 390 during the same period in 2006. In February of 2006, we issued nearly 400 single family home permits that month alone.

So, I would say yes. WE are definetly seeing a slow down, of a huge magnitude...

WOW, where have you been ? The whole east coast Resi Market is dead.
Commercial is still good in the north east.

Everyone I talk to here is very slow. Our building department ( I work there part time) is issuing the fewest permits in a dozen years.

Why is this? I understand that houses are not selling. But doesn't that mean more renovations, additions, remodels? I don't see any of that around here. e/m

You all knew that after a huge building boom like we'd had for the past 3 or 4 years things would one day come to a near halt !
The economy isn't looking so good for anyone , fuel prices constantly climbing
as is the cost of everything else and the wages aren't increasing fast enough to keep up .

Clearly it is time to move into commercial. But I am sort of scared of taking a big hit on the first job, from lack of experience. Any advice?? e/m

That's terrible. Probably took down a great deal of builders with it.

Yeah, and oil hit the magic $100 / barrel mark just a couple of days ago for the first time, and so it goes... e/m

Good Question. You would think that there would be a trickle down affect.but still commercial is still good. the only resi we are doing are for the very hi end people.like the commercial exsecutives. ???????

I dont find a big diffrence between resi and comm, Instead of romex you use mc, Instead of al you use cu. instead of load centers you use panal boards.
instead of pvc you use emt. ECT...

Here's another question that would not have required asking had the member listed their location in their profile ! I thought someone had posted nicely a week or so back that every member should update their profile by adding their location so that other members living in the same region could identify with any pertinent code questions specific to their area of jurisdiction . :-?

Come on ya'll , get with it, please :D

Carl :)

I thought this slow down was part of the credit crunch. Lenders are tightening their belts.

Accepting credit cards might help out. Has anyone opened a Pay Pal account?

Any of you guys sell gift cards?

I think 08,09 are going to be terrible for the residential industry.I remember Mike Holt talking about every 6 years the markets turns.
