I guess it all depends on what you see everyday. If you see risers
on every house, it becomes the norm. If you see exposed SE
cable stapled to the side of every house, it's the norm.

Agreed, and I even think PVC conduit for a riser looks ugly compared to cable. But, as you said, nowhere near as ugly as I am.
