Disagreement With Inspector

I have to go with gmack.1000`s of jobs are done with prewires for future installs.Lighting, fans, pool equip, spas etc. to require that these be installed at the time of inspection is totally silly. To cover thier a## all that needs done is to note on the permit prewire for what ever it is has nothing installed and be done with it.I thought we here had inspectors that took the cake this beats them by a mile.

Wire nuts are devices, and Charlie's box does have devices installed.
No they are not, and no it doesn't. Wire caps do not carry current.

Charlie while we may be able to accept that a wire nut does not 'carry' current there are dozens of other wire connector types that actually carry the full load current.

Here are some that may be found on branch circuit wiring.

(OK here is one, the others would not post. )

Yes some wire nuts are entirely plastic, these are often shipped with cheap Luminaires and are quickly thrown out as they are junk. :p

Edit out bad links

Yes, and you can also buy ceramic wire nuts, which are not cheap and work very well on Luminaires or any place with a lot of heat. I can't remember who makes them and I believe they are rated for 750 degrees F.

The code section you are looking for is 314.25.

Covers and Canopies. In completed installations, each box shall have a cover, faceplate, lamphoder, or luminaire (fixture) canopy, except where the installation complies with 410.14(B).

Re: Disagreement With Inspector

Once again, that would not satisfy that inspector. Remember, he was willing to walk away happy with just a cover on the box. But he would have required that there be no wires in the box. This is from the original question:
Me: So there is no legal use for blank covers?

Inspector: Not if there are wires behind them.

That might be what he said, but read that section.

If you install a faceplate that means there is a receptacle there and you have wires.

If you install a fixture there, you have wires.

If you install a cover, you may or may not have wires. Whats the difference.

When ever you come up against an inspector like this, he is just looking for something and if that's the best he can do, then I feel sorry for him. If he has a boss, go over his head. If he's the boss he still has a boss somewhere. Our office has somewhat of a motto. Sooner or later you're going to sign the job card. Why make it harder than it has to be?

Now, and I ask this time and again, how long are you willing to fight with him and will the outcome be worth it? Now of course if you installed cable it will be very difficult to remove the wires, if it's flex pull them out and get paid.
