Around here its usually a duplex recept with the tab broken off.
I have seen where people bring the romex out of the wall and connect it directly to the appliance.

I would say that is how it is done in my area probly 90 per cent of the time, I always thought it was an odd that the inspectors allow it. Garbage disposals get hardwired with exposed romex alot around here also.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but not this statement:
It would be more fair to say you have wired it safely and competently. Convenience is not a concern of most codes. Performance can be separated between safety and convenience.

I'm a big fan of distributing loads among circuits with performance and convenience in mind, but it's not "terrible" to wire a house "by code" when cost of installation is a priority.

It's that workmanship thing I guess.

For '08 all MWBC's require handle ties.

have seen them wired this way. not a big fan of that.
