Downlight Support

So how would one know to order support bars with these?

Because that is SOP for an architectural down light like this.

Now my vendor is sticking me with an extra charge to supply them and there's a lot.
Do you think they should've come with the fixture? THere's some info under "rough-in frame" section but I'm not clear on it.

They don’t come with the fixture; you have to specify that it in the RFQ. For example if I needed 100 of these, I’d put “(100)x Type D fixture with adjustable hangers”. You don’t necessarily need to know the exact part number, because your quote request will go from your vendor to the line rep who should know exactly what you’re looking for and save you the time of hunting down sku’s. If they don’t, they’ll contact you to clarify.

Going forward, you’ll always want to check the cut sheets on the specified fixtures when you are bidding a job to have an understanding of what is included. For an ACT ceiling you would specify the 24” C-Channel hangers. For framing with gyp board most manufacturers offer a telescoping hanger that adjusts from 16” framing to 24” framing, and if they don’t there will likely be a competitive product that works on that fixture; or you can go with the conduit hanging method. They’re pretty much all the same in that the adjustable hanger will have a stud that bolts in place of the C-Channel bracket using a wing nut.

My preference is always going to be paying for the manufacturer’s optional hanger to save as many labor hours as possible being it’s the most limited resource we have.

Almost every job we do has a typical down light on it. I haven't had any Kenall lately, but they appear to be an Accuity brand. There isn't a supply house in my area that wouldn't include the fixture bars in their quote. Also, I occasionally get my quotes from the distributor, in this case Landreth (the Accuity Rep). They would also include the bars. So the price any supply house gets from them on a fixture package would include the bars. That would be like quoting a fluorescent fixture without quoting the lamps. So I guess it is the relationship you have with you supply houses and my require a conversation

THank you. I usually always check the cut sheets when bidding to check for remote drivers, weights etc.

So according to the snapshot picture Tulsa posted could the C channel be by the ceiling guy and part of his framing?

No….. you have to provide your own supports for your fixtures.

The cut sheet tells you what the brackets will take….
ROUGH-IN FRAME: 18-gauge die-formed, corrosion-resistant steel (type 304 stainless with NAT option). Vertically adjustable collar accommodates ceiling thicknesses up to 2", adjustable post- installation. Universal mounting brackets accept 3/4" and 1-1/2" lathers channel, 1/2" EMT conduit and hanger bars. Quick-access junction box accessible post-installation from above and below ceiling. Includes (4) 1/2" and (2) 3/4" knock-outs to allow straight conduit runs.

You could likely put some TSGB-24’s up there to hang them from as well. Idk who makes it, but I’ve ordered downlights like this and had my supplier provide an adjustable support bracket that’s similar to what you find on a residential style downlight that bolts in place of the universal brackets.

I know that EMT is getting higher and higher in price, but i still think pieces of 1/2" EMT secured to the top of the metal framing members would be the way to go. Even if it was a grid type framing, Caddy makes a clip-on strap that secures to the grid on one side and EMT on the other.

TSGB's would be a little hillbilly. Caddy, Orbit, Garvin all make adjustable brackets that are made for the purpose. C channel can also be used, but requires cutting. I assume the OP knows this because he mentioned how pricey they are.

I would have a fit if my suppliers failed to include these on one of my orders. They would either supply them or I would likely black ball them for a while. I am not saying the OP has the same avenue, it is based on how you deal with the suppliers. I don't go out to Econolight or some Chinese company to buy fixtures. I go to my local supplier and expect proper service, which I believe we pay for. If my supplier is concerned that his price will put him out, he knows enough to pick up the phone. I have trained them well.

This is true with so much. I don't go through the catalog and specify every little accessory with Wall Duct, or floor boxes, or big Wiremold orders, or Cable tray. I send the plans to the distributor, and have them send the number to the supplier I want to buy from. Sure I may pay a little more, but when something is missed it is up to them to make it right. My price and profit don't change.
