EMT used as a sleeve

I am looking to install 1/2"EMT as a sleeve on a block wall to protect NM cable.

The walls are furred with 3/4" high wood strips and I am unable to connect the EMT to the metallic boxes because the k.o and fitting is too close to the front edge and won't allow the drywall to meet the furring.

I just planned on putting a plastic bushing on the end and leaving a 1" gap between the emt and the box.

My question is: Does the emt need to be bonded if it's concealed behind the drywall?

I recall sections not requiring bonding when used as sleeves but can't locate it in the book.

The emt will be 80" long and the opposite end will protrude 3 inches above the rafters in an unfinished attic area.

Thanks.

The section you are looking for is 250.86.

Exception No. 2: Short sections of metal enclosures or
raceways used to provide support or protection of cable
assemblies from physical damage shall not be required to
be connected to the equipment grounding conductor.

No sleeve needed

No sleeve needed

With this type of installation we use NM and just keep the the cable away from the furring strips. We use CA Jaime's or three inch screws and zip ties to secure the cable.

Why are you installing the EMT if the NM cable will be covered by the sheetrock?

Don't waste time and money on EMT! Romex strap and anchor it to block wall. I also used a plastic stand off and cut the excess off with a Saws all.

It will be directly behind the drywall. First time a picture is hung

They went with 3/4 inch furring strips because they thought it was cheap way to go, that shouldn't stop you from giving them the cheap they want, let them learn why cheap isn't always good when they hang that picture;)

What are you using for boxes?

Seems like we have a variation of a question about walls furred out with 1x's every week. IMO if you can't get your boxes and wiring in there it should be on the carpenters to provide a wall where you can. 1x furring was popular many years ago at a time when the Code was less restrictive about box fill and protection of cables from drywall screws. All carpenters know is "we've always done it that way".

Why waste time and money? What is the purpose of using EMT! You still need to secure it to the wall . Correct?

The odds of hitting it with a nail the first time they hang a picture are pretty high compared to hitting a even a moderate win in a lottery.:)

"Command" strips is what they need to hang pictures with anyway, right?

Can't live on possibilities. Their are possibilities on 2x6 walls . Less but still possible. I have done many installs like this, never used EMT, passed AHJ , the main problem was box fill especially with 2 lutron dimmers in the box.

If I can't fit a required box I would knock a hole in the block to make it fit.

That is what those Wiremold extension boxes are for. Customer wanted cheap when they chose to go with 3/4 furring strips, If they don't like the wiremold box - show them the dimmer and ask how they think it is to fit in the shallow box, cheap still has a price at times.

A hammer and 30 seconds makes the big box fit!

Why worry about how someone else wants to do their one job?

Nizak wants an emt sleeve, I see no problem with that. My helpful suggestion was to go ahead and land on the box because the tiny bump in the drywall is not going to be noticed and that way he doesn't have to worry about arguing with the inspector.

If you want to bash holes in walls and do a code minimum job that's fine. That does not appear to be what the OP is interested in though.
