History of 334.12 prohibition of NM above suspended ceilings in commercial space?

Certainly not conductors/cables, other then at a termination point that got hot for whatever reason. I hear a lot of emphasis put on undersized conductors at times - reality is I don't think that in itself causes as much trouble as many think, I think most the issues it does cause is at terminations, but if those are inside an enclosure like they are supposed to be - that greatly reduces fire hazard.

Agreed. The bottom line for me is that these statistics are not in any way, shape or form scientifically derived or verified, and to me are pretty much bunk.
 
For a long time one of the AHJs in our area kept a newspaper article above his desk: Headline:
"Fire Department could find so other cause of the fire so they ruled it 'electrical'"

I've seen news articles stating cause of fires to be "electrical" yet found out that real cause was ignition of combustibles by something like an electric space heater. News article technically not wrong I guess but leaves the impression that someone that installed premises wiring did something wrong when in fact end user misused an appliance.
