How to Advice from AOL

So every time the cops arrest a drug dealer, they're not doing any good? Then why bother arresting drug dealers?.... let's just let 'em have at it.

Wow, pretty far over the top. :D

I remember reading some DIY "TIME Life" books in the 80s that told the readers incorrect information that would result in code violations. The world did not end.

OK. let me rephrase it so you can understand.

You go into someones house and see they have done their own electrical work and it's unsafe.

Is your attitude going to be "Well, there's just so much of this going on there's nothing I can do about it." ?

Did they ask for my help?

If they asked for my help then I could do something about it.

If they did not ask for my help it is not any of my darn business.

The thing that I don't understand is why AOL would post these videos on the Internet without first having a professional review them. The video is only a few minutes long and there are certainly a lot of electrical professionals who could have reviewed and pointed out the errors in a short amount of time.

They are trying to sell ads. They could care less what the content of these snippets is.

That's exactly my attitude. If it is immediately life threatening I'll point it out but many many violations offer no hazzard and are fine left alone.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration only 1% of home fires are caused by electrical distribution but fully one quarter (26.4%) of home fires are caused by cooking.

Should the food network stop allowing cooking shows?

Does the Food Network show you how prepare food incorrectly?

Imagine Julia Child telling everyone to eat raw meat, undercooked eggs, unprocessed dairy products.

The LABOR in electrical isn't complicated. Electricity is very complicated.
The safety requirments for an electrical install is very complicated.
Think about how much time you guys have spent in the study of
this trade. Has anybody learned it all? After 25 years am I still
learning?,yes. I'm starting to think Rocket scientist have it easy.:D

Until they get sued then they will care.

I bet that AOLs lawyers know there liability much better then anyone here does. I also bet they have already discussed it.

Check out Ytube, tens if thousands of videos showing stupid acts of all kinds.

If I watch the above video and then kill myself on a Motorcycle is Ytube really on the hook? I kind of doubt it.

I can see both sides of it. Yeah people are going to try to do it themselves. No we can't stop all the so called experts on the internet. Something should be done about it but it goes a little beyond the reach of this forum as most people that would be likely to listen to someone like the AOL guy probably haven't even heard of this forum. I also realize that like iwire is saying you should pick your battles. It's all a matter of opinion and you're entitled to it by all means

Look at it this way. If you saw an apprentice, a journeyman, or even a foreman on a job doing things the way this guy was or like the j-box that russ posted earlier wouldn't you say something about it? I think we were all taught to do things right so you only have to do them once, have pride in our work etc etc etc. When I see things like these DIY videos it just makes my skin crawl, and as we've seen a few other people agree with me.

Liability and getting sued are two seperate issues. AOL lawyers are probably only interested in liability. The family of the person killed is only interested in suing someone.

The only winners in that horserace would be the lawyers.

You lost me, Dennis indicated they could get sued, any one can get sued for almost anything but prevailing is another issue altogether.

As Bob P indicated AOL puts that video up to draw views to the advertising. They obviously have decided the risk of losing a suit will be less costly then a lack of viewers.

Its all about business, it has nothing to do with really helping the readers.
