I love my job except for...

This job would be great except for the clients! Like those that sit on a project for a year then want it designed in 3 weeks, and want it PERFECT!

I like my work but...

I like my work but...

HOs who are suppose to be there to select fixtures, then go on vacation and have a house sitter who won't let you in...

- Customers who make pages and pages of changes and additions, then complain when they see the bill for them, even when they sign change orders.

- HO's acting as GC's who need it done "right now" and you show up to find the plumbing, HVAC, and framing have yet to be completed.

- Employees' long winded complicated excuses for missing work that I can see right through because I used to use the same ones when I was younger.

You nailed it brother!

I developed me a new trick for combating this one. Now I tell said homeowner I am happy to perform any one of the changes so long as no code is violated, and they bring the checkbook with them when they do the asking. I get paid right then or the change doesn't happen. And so the GC has objections to this method, I first offer him the same deal. Upfront pricing and upfront payment. Period.

guys that work for me and don't care about doing a neat job

I would tell them to start caring about what the work looks like or find another place to work. Workmanship is what our industry is losing on a daily basis.

Most discouraging one is TAXES:(

TESTIFY!

I don't make a ton of money out there, but my combined state and federal taxes exceed the cost of my mortage, handily.

I love my uncle sam, but I didn't know I was going to have to buy him a house.

Trying to pretend I've never heard a customer tell me how much more work he's going to have if he can just get a good price know.

Real Job --

Hearing another department has been outsourced to India.

Unreal Job --

3). Getting into a house to gut the electrical parts, discovering that Katrina is still in there somewhere, and then smelling like *%&(! for the rest of the day because she jumped out of her hiding place and got all over me.
2). Getting into a house that someone else worked on before me and discovering that they know less about code than my cat.

and the Number 1 thing I dislike ...

1). FEMA.

1) GC's who call you on Monday to tell you you need to be there on Tuesday to start a job that you haven't heard a word about in six weeks.

2) ATTICS!
