Inlet on boiler

My issue would be back feeding on the neutral.
I have less of a problem with that and more of a problem with the exposed neutral prong on the inlet. If the "normal" power neutral goes open, you've got a hot prong sticking out of that inlet now. I'd rather see a DPDT relay involved here that would drop out when normal power was lost and let the inlet be connected to the furnace.

Marc,.could the same thing be said for this

Absolutely not.

Actually, I have no idea. If that's built the same way as your furnace setup, without a relay, I have the same concern about the Gentran switch pictured. I'm going out to Lowe's later. I might buy one, take it apart and check, then return it. (unless someone knows already)

You don't have one in stock already?

It is imposable to back feed any circuit with only one conductor.

Scenario: power line goes down, utility worker connects grounded conductor first wouldn't part of the neutral load take that path? I know the lineman would have all his ppe on but there would be current on the wire no? I know this happens in any transfer switch the does not transfer the neutral.

they 3-way switch is not listed for the purpose I've used it for...

I agree.

It's actually listed as a switch. How you use it is up to you. I've used 3-ways as fan speed selectors already.

Transfer switches both manual and automatic have a different listing then normal switches.

It is found in the white book TRANSFER SWITCHES (WPTZ)

FWIW I have also used three ways as fan speed controls.

No... I don't use them at all. I use the see-saw handle intertie thing on a regular subpanel.
Oh right, the Square D thingamabob. Do you also use the see-saw that interlocks the main breaker to a generator feed breaker without the use of a subpanel?

i'll give you my LLsolution ;), who would see a problem with the boiler system being cord and plug connected? IE: break the circuit before it goes to the emergency switch and let only the ground be common, maybe a 20A twistlock and receptacle by the panel? Or just get them a small 4 circuit gentran or similar item?

Wouldn't part of the current go through all possible paths, including ground? I'm not saying the full amount of it but some.

The path out to the utility via the neutral is not a 'possible path' without a second conductor from the generator also connected to the utility.

Could the second path be earth? H/O panel is grounded and so it the transformer on the pole. Not Even 1 little milliamp Bob?

The last time I checked with Hubbell, their answer was that a three-way switch is not rated to transfer between sources of power. It works fine for transferring loads, but it lacks the internal clearances/insulation required for live source to live source switching.

Would a "center-off" three-way be rated for transferring between sources of power?

Cheers, Wayne

that sounds right to me ,.. there will never be a live source to live source switching ...
it's staying !!
